Currently teaching in Albuquerque, NM
A dedicated yoga practitioner and teacher (who first learned from his mother at the age of seven), Chris Courtney, offers classes which enable you to link your breath, mind and body – allowing you to stay focused, calm, aware and steady. Chris trained with Doug Swenson and his multi-faceted vinyasa style of yoga; Sadhana Yoga Chi. As a Sadhana Yoga Chi teacher, Chris aims to create a holistic balance between strength and softness; between the internal practice and the external results. These are addressed through the encouragement of body/mind awareness, as well as a series of dynamic, flowing movements. His influences also include Deb Dobbin, David Swenson, Tias Little and Desiree Rumbaugh.
Wellness and integrity of daily living are what Chris most values on his journey as a teacher and life-long student. He brings over two decades of group fitness and outdoor leadership experience into his teaching and while his classes vary, his signature style is an ashtanga-inspired vinyasa-based mix infused with humor and generous helpings of kick-your-asana power flow sequences.
He founded the Grassroots Yoga cooperative in Albuquerque, New Mexico and currently teaches at Blissful Spirits Yoga.
An avid climber, hiker and skier with more than 10 seasons in the Chamonix Valley (and more in the Cascades and southern Rockies), Chris also offers specialized yoga classes for climbers, skiers and runners. Chris is also an Iraq War veteran who offers free classes (in a special program) for his fellow vets. He also offer private yoga therapy consulting and is a member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists. Chris is grateful for his many teachers in life, especially his family, Doug Swenson, and his students.
In between teaching yoga classes, he is also a regular contributor to Elephant Journal, an online yoga and wellness magazine.
